Prayer is meant to help us overcome our weaknesses and deepen our relationship with Krsna. Yet, if we are not praying for pure bhakti, our very prayers can reinforce our fears and insecurities about surrender to Krsna and His plan for us.
We can learn a lot about ourselves by looking at what we pray for. If, for example, we often pray to the Lord for our material well being, or we are reluctant to pray to Krsna to do with us as He likes, our prayers are likely motivated more by fear than by love. Thus prayer reflects what’s going on inside of us.
We must look at our most important spiritual aspirations and create prayers around these. It is important to do this because what we really want to achieve in our spiritual lives and the obstacles we must overcome to get there should form the basis of our regular prayers.
After looking at the use and misuse of prayer in bhakti and how to direct our personal prayers, we discuss how to incorporate the mood of our own prayers into our daily japa practice.
